Books that help busy families raise confident readers.

"I believe every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader — because if you can't read, math is a mystery and history is just a bunch of pictures in a book."
If you've ever wished someone could explain child development, learning, or special education in plain English—with a little humor thrown in—you've come to the right place.
I'm Elaine Hilowitz, an author, educational consultant, and pediatric occupational therapist with more than 45 years of experience helping children reach their potential. For nearly four decades, I worked in Virginia public schools conducting evaluations, developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), writing educational goals, and collaborating with families and multidisciplinary teams to help children succeed both in and out of the classroom.
While my professional career centered on education and child development, my passion has always been writing. Over the years, my articles, stories, and humor have appeared in publications including Chicken Soup for the Soul, Highlights for Children, teacher publications, and parenting magazines and newsletters. Whether I'm writing a humorous essay, a magazine article, or a children's picture book, my goal is always the same—to educate, encourage, and entertain.
As the mother of two grown children and the proud grandmother of Orrin, I understand that parenting is equal parts joy, exhaustion, celebration, and improvisation. Some of my greatest inspiration has come from watching children learn, ask unexpected questions, solve problems in their own unique ways, and remind adults to see the world through curious eyes.
That perspective shapes everything I create.
My children's books are designed to be more than bedtime stories. They are carefully written to strengthen early literacy, language, attention, and parent-child interaction while making reading together fun. Many include conversation starters and activities that help busy families turn just fifteen minutes of reading into meaningful learning and lasting memories.
In addition to writing, I continue to advocate for children through educational consulting, IEP resources, parent education, and practical tools that help families confidently navigate the special education process. My professional experience has taught me that when parents understand how children learn, they become their child's most effective advocate.
When I'm not writing, you'll usually find me painting, designing jewelry, crocheting, singing, collecting unusual rocks, spending time with my family, or dreaming up another story inspired by one of the many remarkable children—and cats—who have crossed my path.
Thank you for visiting my website. Whether you're here looking for a children's book, educational resources, guidance through the IEP process, or simply a story that makes you smile, I hope you'll find something that informs, inspires, and reminds you that every child has extraordinary potential waiting to be discovered.
